It consists of three blades which represent Lord Shiva, Shakti and Ganesha. Bermuda grass is sacred to Lord Ganesha, the oversoul or “Atman” and is considered “the remover of all obstacles”. Generally, the tender shoots of durva are used in worship ritual of a deity.

Bermuda grass is loaded with medicinal uses that can be used as home remedies. Bermuda grass is used as antiviral and antimicrobial. In India, Bermuda grass has great significance in Ayurveda because of its medicinal as well as clinical properties.

Why Bermuda grass (Durva) used to worship God Ganesha

Once a demon named Analasura caused havoc in the heaven. He emitted fire from his eyes and destroyed whatever came in his way. To save the heaven from the terror of demon, God Ganesha fought with the demon Analasura. In the battlefield, Analasura started attacking God Ganesha with fireballs and eventually tried to gulp him down. At that moment God Ganesha showed him his original form and gulped down the demon instead.

After gulping the demon, God Ganesha felt extremely restless due to the heat inside his body. So, the moon came to his help and stood on Ganesha’s head. Thus he was named ‘Bhalchandra’. God Vishnu gave his lotus to bring down the heat; God Shiva tied his cobra around Ganesha’s belly. But nothing could bring down the heat. Finally, a few sages came with 21 leaves of Bermuda grass (Durva) and placed them on Ganesha’s head. Miraculously, the heat went off. Thus, God Ganesha declared that whoever worships him with Bermuda grass (Durva) will receive his blessings forever.
